Why You Can’t Find Work From Home Jobs

Are you looking for a job that you can do from home but are having trouble doing so? Actually, there are lots of work from home jobs out there and most of them are fabulous! Finding a work at home job is difficult, but not impossible. However, it can be that much more labor intensive. Some people say that looking for a job is a full-time job. If you are having trouble finding a work at home job or finding one that pays well enough to make it worth your time, you are probably making one of the following common mistakes.

You are applying for jobs that don’t match your skills

Because you really want to work from home, you tend to apply for every opening you come across. However, you’re probably not qualified for every job.

Your time is best spent putting effort into applying for the positions you’re qualified for and those that fit your ideal job criteria. For each job, you should personalize your resume and draw attention to how your skills match the position. Having a specialized skill makes it so much easier to find work from home jobs.

Prioritize your applications working first on those for which you are the most qualified. Companies often use talent management software to automatically screen out those who don’t meet the educational or experience requirements.

If you don’t have a specialized skill (or think you do), don’t give up yet. You can learn relevant online courses or work for yourself to build a skill. For example, you want to apply for work from home copywriters, and of course, writing skills are a must. You can build this skill by starting a blog and becoming a freelance writer.

Your resume is not competitive enough

A job ad can be seen by many people and gets hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants. When so many job seekers are all competing for a limited number of openings, it’s really tough to stand out in the crowd — even if you are perfect for the job.

If your previous work experience was in a field that doesn’t translate well into a work-at-home position, you may need to package those work skills with other more relevant skills when you present yourself to employers. Or, you may need to gain new skills (by the above-mentioned methods).

For example, experience in customer service in a retail store may be helpful in a work from home call center. However, you will probably need to show that you have computer skills as well. Make sure that you highlight any education or experience you have with computers or on the phone.

Your social media accounts are not professional

The way you promote yourself on social media is crucial whether you’re looking to start a home-based business or applying for work from home jobs. Your accounts will be checked by clients and companies. So, look through your accounts and make sure everything on them portrays the image that you want – mature, responsible, and employable.

First impressions are everything. Be sure your accounts are highlighting your strengths. For example, if you are a writer, your posts should show your writing skills to market yourself. Use social media to your advantage rather than having it work against you, regardless of your industry.

You are not presenting yourself well

Before interviewing, written communication is the best way to make a good first impression. Problems writing effective emails here can torpedo your chances.

Spoken communication is important as well. If you interview by phone or via teleconference, be sure to prepare well. Most importantly, keep all noise and distractions to an absolute minimum. If the interviewer doesn’t have your full attention for the interview, they are unlikely to think you’ll be focused enough to work at home.

When interviewing, focus on how working from home would benefit the company. For example, cutting out your commuting time allows you more time to catch up on products. Or because you don’t have the distractions of the office, you can be more productive.

Home-based businesses may use the same logic. You need to have a strong sales pitch if you want to get customers. Identify and highlight your accomplishments. Focus on the good things rather than the bad.
