5 Common Challenges for Work From Home Moms and How to Overcome Them

Working from home is a fantastic dream come true for moms who long to be home with kids and earn an income. However, once you’re in the chaotic mix of running a business and raising a family, you may discover that there are some challenges to working from home that often go untold. You realize that you have to handle everything all at once as a multi-tasker, from children and home to careers. For the mother’s physical and emotional health, all this work has a negative impact.
Don’t worry! I’m here to share with you five common work-at-home problems and some solutions to overcome them.
1. Loneliness
Working from home has one major drawback: working from home. Before you realize it, days or even weeks go by since the last time you left home. It looks like you become a prisoner of your home office.
Working at home removes the social element found at “normal” jobs, and unless you have a local business partner or employee, you can easily go all day without human contact. You miss the camaraderie of office colleagues and having someone to talk to during your workday. It’s always nice to have someone to bounce ideas or troubleshoot with.
A lack of social interaction causes us to feel more isolated and lonely. Loneliness is detrimental to your physical and emotional health and might lower your performance.
How to overcome this challenge
Plan social events that will provide you with the social connection you require away from work. Try working in a co-working space or library, or set up frequent video calls with friends and family.
If you work from home for a company, ask for a colleague to meet you every week to discuss your work, ideas, and challenges. This can help you overcome the loneliness.
If you are working for yourself, find a mentor or someone in the same field to unload your doubts and ideas. Currently, there are a lot of entrepreneur groups, mother groups, or groups related to your field on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter). Personal connections are chicken soup for the work-at-home soul, even if those connections are online.
2. Motivation
Whether you’re a remote worker or a self-employed person, it’s simple to lose motivation when working from home.
Your long-term job objectives may slip your mind due to a lack of external input and engagement with coworkers, which ultimately results in a loss of motivation. Goes without saying no motivation means no productivity.
If you are running your own business, it also gets difficult to stay motivated and put in the work each day. You start to get a little relaxed about deadlines or feel bored sitting at the laptop when at home. You start slacking on your goals and before you know it you are wondering why you are even doing what you set out to do.
How to overcome this challenge
I use a daily and weekly planner to help me stay on top of my to-do list. I don’t over-schedule myself, because even seeing too many things on the list is a put-off for me to start working. You can try it.
Also, list your long-term objectives. Incorporate objectives pertaining to your professional, financial, and personal desires. To retain them in your mind, go back to them frequently. Think about pinning them on the wall of your office.
There are some ways to give me a boost in motivation like reading and listening to motivational talks. Also, spending quality time with my kids, and watching them grow up drives my efforts to be a good role model for them.
3. Distraction
When you work from home with little kids, interruptions and distractions are commonplace. Even the most planned and disciplined remote team members are susceptible to distractions at home. A little bit of distraction is not a bad thing, but when those distractions ruin your workflow, you are in trouble.
How to overcome this challenge
I have shared tips for moms working from home with kids; you can read the full post here. Though working in the same space as your kids may not be easy, it does become more manageable as time goes by.
In addition to children, you may have some distractions from domestic chores or other activities like Netflix, Facebook, Instagram, etc. Try to stay on top of your to-do list for the day; it’s very important to be productive as a work from home mom.
A report in 2023 revealed that 45% of work-from-home workers work from a location in their home that has multiple purposes, such as the living room, or kitchen. It can be hard when space is a premium, but choose a quiet area of your home where you can work without interruptions if you can.

4. Mommy guilt
kids can have you feeling guilty over just about anything. Especially devoting time to something other than them, like running your business. This is why there is a constant and ceaseless feeling of guilt that remains in the conscience of all mothers, if they choose their careers over their homes, they are placed in a questionable position.
How to overcome this challenge
First of all, talk to your children and family about the importance of your work, how it helps the family, and how it makes you feel.
You should create your schedule including your working schedule and family schedule, and try to stick to it.
More importantly, take it easy, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
5. No time for yourself
Living and working in the same place might make it difficult to distinguish between personal and professional life. The fact that you are always at home and at work makes it more difficult to keep the two distinct. As a result, maintaining a good work-life balance can be challenging when the workday is done. It can also be tough to unwind and shut off.
How to overcome this challenge
If you want to avoid burnout, you absolutely have to take time for self-care.
If you can, create a dedicated office space in your home. This might assist you in setting boundaries between your personal and work lives. When you’re ready to “go home,” shut your laptop and lock the door.
Every day, allow 20 to 30 minutes for light activity, such as walking, yoga, or working out. Include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet to ensure that your body is nourished.
Schedule time for yourself. It can be anything from going for a run early in the morning to clear your mind to a sudsy bubble bath late at night when the kids are in bed.
